Stress Management

All of us experience stress in our day-to-day lives. The morning rush, deadlines, our dynamics with our family, friends and co-workers, the daily commute, workload, schoolwork. The list goes on and on.

Most people would tell me that they are adept at dealing with stress. However, being a TCM acupuncturist, through body, face, tongue, and pulse readings, plus their answers to TCM questions, I usually find out that these daily stresses and stressors lodge and fester in their bodies in the form of pain, certain types of emotions, acute and chronic illnesses, confusion, anxiety, addictions, feelings of heaviness, weight gain/loss, and the likes.

How can we manage or lessen the effects of stress?

There are a lot of stress management techniques. Choose one that works for you and that you can do regularly.

  1. Slow deep breaths
Taking the time out 3-5 times a day to take slow deep breaths even for a minute can do wonders. It can immediately take away feelings of overwhelm. As you do, relax your body and mind and let go of the emotions and worries that have accumulated.
  2. Rest and sleep
Nothing can be more recharging than taking a time off to rest and sleep. During sleep, our body and mind can repair and recharge. The right time and the right amount of sleep is important for total wellbeing
  3. Eat nourishing whole food
As we all know, food is our fuel, and it is best to eat nourishing food. You want the best fuel for your body. Avoid processed and chemically laden food.
  4. Leisure and relaxation
Make sure that your leisure time is relaxing and not demanding. Go out in nature just to bask in its glory and beauty. Avoid entertainment that can be too overwhelming and elicit strong emotions like gaming. If you are to watch a movie, avoid violent ones.
  5. Exercise
Physical exercise helps a lot in maintaining good circulation and a good physique. Moderate exercise is recommended. Avoid exhausting exercises as these may deplete your qi or energy and therefore, produce more stress. Exercise only to the point of “feeling good”. Best exercises to reduce stress are light yoga, qi gong, Pilates, walking, etc.

Those are the things that you can do on your own.

Here are other options that entail the assistance of professionals:

  1. TCM Acupuncture
Identifies imbalances and their root causes and effectively brings the body back to harmony. Immediate results include relaxation and better sleep. Reduces stress as it calms the body.
  2. Reiki, Jin Shin Jyutsu and other forms of energy healing
Balances and harmonizes the body resulting in total relaxation.
  3. Massage
    Reduces muscle tension.

This is not an exhaustive list. There are other ways. Remember to incorporate them in your daily life and observe their effects.
